November's Peek At The Point

Hello Turning Point's supporters and friends!

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope everyone has a safe and warm holiday.

What a year it has been at Turning Point.... We have so much to feel thankful for! Read on to hear more about what we have been up to, and how you can help as we move into the season of annual giving.

Turning Point Program Updates!

We have a new mission statement!!!

This has been a huge year of change, growth, and development at Turning Point, and what better way to share our shift than with a new mission statement. Shout out to Farai and Parker, who did the initial work, and to all who attended the October staff meeting, for helping finalize a statement that encompasses who we are and what we do. The Board of Directors approved what we came up with, and we are excited to share it with all of you!

"Fostering meaningful connections, growth, and wellness through personalized services for individuals, families, and communities impacted by trauma, mental health, and substance use challenges."

Did you know we provide services to youth, ADULTS, and families?

Turning Point offers a variety of outpatient mental health and substance use treatment services to all ages. We accept Medicaid insurance, sometimes have grant funding covering the cost of services, and we offer a sliding fee scale.

We offer a sliding fee for uninsured or underinsured!

We now offer a sliding fee for all of our on-site programs. Clients wishing to utilize this will have an application process, but any client making less than 100% of the poverty line, can qualify for free services with a nominal fee ($10). Clients making 100-200% of the poverty line will receive discounted services.

Meet our Behavior Coaches!

We are so proud of the good work happening through our behavior coaching program! This program continues to grow, with demand, in both Larimer and Weld County. We are hiring more coaches, so if you know any good candidates send them our way!

"Using experiential learning to guide Therapeutic Conversation"

Hannah Penniman, a Bachelor’s Level intern working on a psychology degree with a concentration in Addiction counseling, did an experiential learning activity with our Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) clients. The activity involved potting succulent plants.

Experiential learning is an engaged learning process in which participants "learn by doing" and reflect on the experience.

Hannah brought in some succulents, pots, and soil for the IOP clients so they could get some hands-on experience with potting plants. She chose this because many studies support the hypothesis that potting plants can reduce stress, increase mindfulness, and serve as a connection to nature. After all, it is very therapeutic. Additionally, she wanted to try something new with the clients that is more covertly therapeutic, so there was less resistance to doing the activity, which proved effective. The clients enjoyed this activity and got a lot out of it. For example, some of the questions asked helped clients realize that taking care of a plant is similar to taking care of themselves. They must provide things that will help them grow and nourish themselves in many ways. She asked how it related to recovery, and the clients discussed that taking care of a plant means you need to be gentle with yourself and do things that will help them grow as a person, meaning they could reduce their triggers and intake of substances to become more healthy and stable as a person. At the end of the activity and discussion, the clients could take the succulents home, and they discussed that it would help them have a sense of responsibility in their lives to care for a living thing.

2023 Pumpkin Potluck Showdown

At Turning Point's November staff meeting we feasted on all things pumpkin, for Pumpkin Potluck Showdown 2023. Everyone brought a pumpkin dish to share, and we had quite the spread of pumpkin-filled delights, making it hard to choose winners.

Congratulations to our winners! Farai took Best in Gord with her delicious pumpkin curry. Sydney and Christina won So Savory and SWEETEST! for their tasty contributions. Shout out to Jamie for suggesting the event, Jamie and Antonia for their role as judges, and Annie for the prizes.

We all left full of pumpkiny goodness and better trained for Motivational Interviewing.
